Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Review: Is the Premium SPF Worth Buying in 2026?

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Review: Is the Premium SPF Worth Buying in 2026?

Petal Beauty Skincare · Details and prices checked October 14, 2026

How we reviewed it: we haven’t personally tested this sunscreen. This is a research-based editorial review built from Supergoop!’s official product pages, FDA and American Academy of Dermatology guidance, retailer listings and other publishers’ reporting. We label brand claims and anecdotes as such.

Most people don’t dislike sunscreen so much as the way it feels: the greasy film, the gray-white cast, the foundation that slides around by lunchtime. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen was built to fix exactly that. It’s a clear gel that dries to a smooth, primer-like finish, which is why it keeps appearing on “best under makeup” lists.

As an Amazon Associate, Petal Beauty Skincare earns from qualifying purchases. This means we may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you.

The hesitation is the price. At $38 for 1.7 fl oz on Supergoop!’s own site, it costs several times more per ounce than a drugstore bottle. So the real question isn’t whether Unseen is pleasant to wear. It’s whether the texture is worth paying for. For people who wear makeup daily or skip sunscreen because of white cast, it may be. For swimmers, bargain hunters and very dry skin, other options probably make more sense.

What Is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen?

Unseen is a chemical (non-mineral) face sunscreen sold as sunscreen and makeup primer in one. It’s a clear, silicone-based gel that dries to a soft, blurring finish. The current face version is SPF 50 and broad spectrum.

The official Supergoop! product page calls it weightless and scentless, with no white cast on any skin tone. The brand also says it improves skin clarity and makeup wear, citing independent studies of 33 women. Those are brand-reported results that we haven’t verified.

Supergoop! also says Unseen holds the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation. We couldn’t confirm that on the Foundation’s own site, so treat it as the brand’s statement. The Skin Cancer Foundation says products earn its Seal by submitting third-party lab data, and daily-use products must be at least SPF 30. It doesn’t endorse a product unless that product has earned the Seal.

Key Features and Ingredients

Broad-spectrum protection. The official active ingredients are avobenzone 3%, homosalate 7%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 9%. These organic filters absorb UV light, which is why the gel can be clear. Per the FDA, SPF mainly reflects UVB (sunburn) protection, so look for the “broad spectrum” label to cover UVA too.

Texture. The ingredient list opens with isododecane, a fast-evaporating solvent, followed by several dimethicone crosspolymers. These silicone-based ingredients create the smooth, primer-like feel. They’re also the reason the formula can behave differently over water-based products.

Skincare-style extras. You’ll find meadowfoam, shea butter, jojoba esters, bisabolol and a licorice root derivative. Supergoop! says they help support the moisture barrier and soothe skin. Don’t expect this sunscreen to treat acne, dark spots or wrinkles. The label-supported job is sun protection, used as directed with other sun-safety measures.

Fragrance and sensitivities. Supergoop! calls it scentless, and no fragrance appears on the ingredient list. That isn’t a guarantee against irritation. A couple of reviewers on the brand’s site report stinging when it migrates near the eyes, and the label says to stop use and ask a doctor if a rash occurs.

SPF 40 vs SPF 50: What Changed?

Supergoop!’s current face product is Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50, labeled “new.” The page says its newer polymers give a lighter feel than the original SPF 40. Many older reviews describe the SPF 40 version, so check which one a review covers.

  • Confirmed (official page): SPF 50 uses avobenzone 3%, homosalate 7%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 9%.
  • Secondhand: Insider Beauty reports the old SPF 40 listed homosalate 8% and octocrylene 4% (avobenzone and octisalate unchanged), and that Supergoop!’s old face page no longer loads. Supergoop! no longer lists the old formula, so we couldn’t confirm those numbers ourselves.
  • Not the same product: Supergoop! still sells Unseen Body SPF 40 and Unseen Stick SPF 40. They’re different formulas from the face SPF 50.

If an Amazon listing shows an SPF 40 face bottle, treat it as older stock. Check the carton and expiration date before buying.

Performance and Wear

We haven’t tested Unseen ourselves. The evidence below comes from brand studies, roughly 5,750 customer reviews on Supergoop!’s own site (about 4.7 out of 5, but brand-run, so it may skew positive) and other publishers’ editorial reviews.

Texture and absorption. Reviewers describe a silky gel that sets quickly to a velvety, slightly matte finish. Supergoop! says to wait 30 seconds before makeup.

Makeup compatibility. This is the strongest finding. The brand’s study compared wear against foundation alone, and brand-site reviewers repeatedly say it grips foundation. That’s anecdotal, but consistent.

Pilling. Brand-site reviewers say it doesn’t pill. Insider Beauty argues that silicone gels can roll into threads over water-based serums and gel moisturizers, and suggests letting layers dry and pressing rather than rubbing. That’s editorial analysis, not lab testing.

Oily, combination and dry skin. Supergoop! recommends it for all skin types. Millennial Skin and Insider Beauty both find it best for combination and oily skin, and say very dry skin can feel grabby. The ingredient list contains no water or humectants such as glycerin, so don’t count on it to hydrate.

White cast. The ingredient list has no zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, so the chalky cast typical of mineral sunscreens shouldn’t occur. The brand and reviewers report none.

Everyday comfort. Most reviewers find it comfortable. The eye-stinging reports are worth knowing about if you apply close to the lash line.

Who Should Buy It?

People who wear makeup regularly. This is Unseen’s best use case. If sunscreen has ruined your base before, the primer-like finish is the reason to pay more.

People who want a clear sunscreen without a white cast. It’s a strong fit. If you’re over 40 and comparing lightweight daily options, our best non-greasy sunscreens for mature skin roundup covers more choices.

Oily and combination skin. Brand claims and editorial reviews point the same way, and Supergoop! describes the formula as suitable for acne-prone skin. A primer-like finish doesn’t guarantee a good match for every skin type, so try the 0.68 fl oz size first if you’re unsure.

Dry or sensitive skin. Mixed. The brand recommends it for sensitive and dry skin, but independent reviewers find it less comfortable on very dry skin. It contains four chemical filters, so if you’ve reacted to chemical sunscreens before, a mineral formula may suit you better. Calming ingredients such as those in our centella asiatica vs aloe vera comparison can help in a barrier-friendly routine, but they don’t make a sunscreen gentler on their own.

Budget-conscious shoppers. Probably skip it. You’ll pay mainly for feel, not extra UV protection.

Swimmers, sweaty workouts and long outdoor days. Supergoop!’s directions say to reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. The AAD recommends water-resistant sunscreen, and PLAY Everyday Lotion lists 80 minutes. Choose the latter for water days.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Clear gel with no mineral filters, so no white cast is expected
  • Primer-like finish that reviewers say grips makeup
  • Broad-spectrum SPF 50, scentless and fragrance-free by ingredient list
  • Several sizes, including a 0.68 fl oz travel size
  • Skin Cancer Foundation Seal (brand-stated)

Cons

  • Premium price: about $22.35 per fl oz at the 1.7 fl oz size
  • Chemical filters only
  • Silicone base may pill over some water-based skincare, according to editorial reviewers
  • Not hydrating; may feel grabby on very dry skin
  • A few reviewers report eye stinging
  • Needs reapplication at least every two hours, and 40 minutes after swimming or sweating

Is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Worth the Price?

Here’s the cost per fluid ounce at current prices:

  • Unseen 0.68 fl oz at $19: about $27.94 per fl oz
  • Unseen 1.7 fl oz at $38: about $22.35 per fl oz
  • Unseen 2.5 fl oz at $48: about $19.20 per fl oz
  • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55: about $3.29 per fl oz at some retailers
  • e.l.f. Whoa Glow SPF 30: roughly $8–$9 per fl oz

All three Supergoop!-style comparisons use the same four filter ingredients at different percentages. You’re paying for texture and convenience, not stronger UV protection. That’s a personal preference, and a fair one.

  • Makeup users who prioritize texture: Yes, likely worth it, especially in the 2.5 fl oz size.
  • Shoppers who mainly want affordable sun protection: No. A drugstore SPF you’ll actually wear costs far less.
  • People who need water resistance for swimming or sweating: No. Choose an 80-minute water-resistant formula.

e.l.f. Suntouchable Whoa Glow SPF 30 is the closest budget match in concept, not an exact dupe. It’s a water-based cream with aloe, hyaluronic acid and squalane, and it comes in sheer peach, champagne and bronze shimmer shades. Unseen is a clear, silicone-based gel with no shimmer. Both are chemical sunscreens, but they feel and finish differently.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55 is the value pick for protection per dollar. It carries an 80-minute water-resistance claim and costs a fraction of Unseen. The formula contains fragrance, and the label warns it may stain fabrics.

Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50 suits days outdoors. It’s rated 80 minutes water- and sweat-resistant and can be used on face and body. It has a fresh scent from natural aromatic extracts, and Supergoop! sells a separate fragrance-free PLAY face lotion.

How to Apply It Correctly

Unseen goes on after your skincare and before makeup. Supergoop!’s directions say to apply generously and evenly about 15 minutes before sun exposure, then wait about 30 seconds before makeup.

The AAD recommends at least 1 teaspoon for the face, and says most adults need about an ounce for exposed skin on the body. Thin “primer-sized” layers deliver less protection than the label promises.

Let serums dry first. If your routine includes a vitamin C serum for oily skin, or you’re deciding between niacinamide vs vitamin C for acne marks, apply your active serum first and give it a few minutes to settle before sunscreen. That also reduces the chance of pilling.

When outdoors, the AAD and FDA both say to reapply at least every two hours, and more often after swimming or sweating. Supergoop!’s directions add reapplying immediately after towel drying and after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. The FDA notes that no sunscreen is waterproof.

FAQs

1. Is Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen worth the money in 2026? It’s likely worth it if you wear makeup daily or skip sunscreen because of white cast. If you want the most protection per dollar, cheaper options use similar filters.

2. Is the current formula SPF 40 or SPF 50? The current face formula is SPF 50. SPF 40 remains only in the separate body and stick products.

3. Does it leave a white cast? It shouldn’t. The ingredient list has no mineral filters or pigments, and the brand and reviewers report none.

4. Can you wear it under makeup? Yes. It’s marketed as a primer, and Supergoop! says to wait about 30 seconds before applying makeup.

5. Is it suitable for oily skin? Brand claims and editorial reviews say it’s a good fit for oily and combination skin. Individual results vary.

6. Is it suitable for dry or sensitive skin? Mixed. The brand recommends it, but independent reviewers find it less comfortable on very dry skin. Patch test if your skin is reactive.

7. Does it pill under moisturizer or foundation? Brand-site reviewers say it doesn’t. One editorial source says it can over water-based serums and gels. Let layers dry first.

8. Is it water-resistant? The directions say to reapply after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating, which implies a 40-minute claim. Confirm on the carton you receive.

9. What is the best affordable alternative? e.l.f. Whoa Glow SPF 30 is the closest in concept at about $14. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 is the cheapest high-SPF, water-resistant option.

10. How often should you reapply it? At least every two hours outdoors, after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating, and immediately after towel drying.

Final Verdict

Buy Unseen if you wear makeup most days, hate white cast, or have combination or oily skin and have given up on sunscreen because of texture. The invisible, primer-like finish is the real product here.

Save your money if you mainly want affordable protection, need water resistance for swimming or workouts, or have very dry or reactive skin.

For a different priority: e.l.f. Whoa Glow SPF 30 for a cheaper glowy primer, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 for budget water resistance, and PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50 for long outdoor days. Whichever you choose, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll apply generously and reapply.
